Split Architecture Carrier Grade Networks

The monolithic design of network elements with integrated forwarding, control and processing blocks the development of new protocols and technologies. Breaking this design lock is key to pave the way in order to develop new protocols and architectures and to relieve existing hardware and infrastructure from legacy architectures. The European funded SPARC FP7 project researched the carrier grade extensions to split architectures. This included OAM, restoration and reliability, network virtualisation and resource isolation in order to open carrier networks to the benefits of split architectures.

EICT executed the administrative project management. EICT also conducted research in the area of applying carrier grade capabilities to OpenFlow and SDN in general.
